FIREFIGHTERS RIDE OUT HURRICANE IRENE!
On Saturday, August 27th, the members of NWFD began to prepare for Hurricane Irene which was predicted to be a devastating Storm for our community. A mandatory recall of all career personnel was issued. In addition to the normal staffing, 10 additional firefighters reported for duty at 1200 hours after securing their homes and making sure that their families were safely evacuated. They were advised that they may have to stay until at least Tuesday morning. In addition to the Municipal Division there was approximately 15 additional volunteer firefighters that chose to stay and respond from their respective stations (Sta. 2-1 & Sta 2-2). Crews began to check and double check all the equipment and apparatus to ensure it was ready to operate for possibly several hours. Chief Cole worked with the City O.E.M. coordinator and kept the crews updated of the conditions that the City may face. During the storm Fire Headquarters was staffed with 16 Firefighter/

EMT's, 2 Paramedics, Police Officers, Lifeguards, and Emergency Management staff (Approximately 30 people). During the first wave of the storm crews did respond to some emergencies such as arcing wires and alarms sounding. Fortunately the bulk of the storm had skipped over North Wildwood and the damage was limited. The following day the winds had picked up tremendously which caused firefighters to respond to several incidents following the storm. The firefighters (Career & Volunteer) take pride in their community and even when faced with a Hurricane they are still willing to step up and protect the city.

Emergency Responders Should Be Budget Priorities

To the Editor:

Recently, my 4-year-old son nearly drowned in our backyard pool. He was blue, unconscious and in respiratory arrest when we pulled him from the water.

The North Wildwood Police and Fire departments were on hand in 90 seconds. My son was stabilized and ready for transport to Cape Regional Medical Center within five minutes. We are glad to report that he has recovered completely and seems to have no recollection of the horrible incident.

I'll write another letter soon about responsible parenting, pool safety and the value of knowing first aid; this letter's purpose is to express my family's deep appreciation for the amazing service the town's professional first-responders provided in our time of need. These wonderful people saved our son's precious life.

I am keenly aware of the current budget issues facing every town in the state. I have always been a strong proponent of responsible spending and budget oversight. We are all facing tough times and are more critical of our elected representation when it comes to spending our tax dollars.

But I'll gladly make sacrifices elsewhere to help ensure that public-safety programs have the staff and equipment to perform as quickly and effectively for everyone as they did for my family.
